Welcoming the Jewish New Year: Celebrating Rosh Hashanah at St. James Center

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, marks a season of reflection, renewal, and joyful gathering. In 2025, it will begin at sundown on Monday, September 22 and continue through nightfall on Wednesday, September 24. Traditionally, families and friends come together to share prayers, meaningful conversation, and festive meals that celebrate the sweetness of life and the hope for a good year ahead.

The Meaning of Rosh Hashanah

The name “Rosh Hashanah” literally means “Head of the Year,” and it begins the Ten Days of Awe—a period of self-reflection and spiritual preparation leading to Yom Kippur. Customs include lighting candles, reciting blessings, and sharing symbolic foods: apples dipped in honey for a sweet new year, round challah bread representing the cycle of time, and pomegranates symbolizing abundance.
